The best steakhouse in San Francisco is Harris' Steakhouse, and not just because I work there. You can try one of the chains like Morton's or Ruth Chris', but they seem corporate and cold. Harris' is a classic old style place with big booths, high ceiling, dark wood, brass and glass. It is a bit pricey, but you get prime beef, some of it aged right on the premises.
For a locals spot, I'd try Liverpool Lil's or The Brazenhead. The Brazenhead is on the corner of Greenwich and Buchanon. The cool thing about it is that it doesn't even have a sign on the outside saying it is a restaurant. You have to know about it. Therefore, not a lot of tourists go there, not that you wouldn't be welcome. Beware though, it may still be cash only business. This helps them keep their prices reasonable.
Have fun in SF.

Burgers: In & Out
Italian: On the wharf

My favorite in SF is Shalimar on Mission and Geary. Best Indian food I've had in the U.S.

Well, if you like garlic you must dine at the Stinking Rose. It is a unique experience, but you will smell for three days or so afterwards! Blondie's is good for pizza. Stars restaurant is good and a little fancy.
