Two things to do. One is that if you have central AC/Heating, change the air filter to a 3M Filtrete one, the bigger the number, the better. Next, if you want, contact an HVAC company to come clean yer ducts, that is if you have them. If you do have ducts, and after the HVAC guys have cleaned up, get some register filters. And finally.... Go buy 1 Ionic Breeze GP, for an apartment, you'll only need one to do the job. And finally, when it comes to cleaning, vacuum first, then dust. Expect some residual dust to show up, but doing the above will totally help.

Get an air filter. Since you live in an apartment you'll have to get one of those freestanding units, which aren't quite as efficient as mounting a filter in your heating ducts. But buying a good high-quality HEPA filter (or better yet, one for each room) and letting them run 24/7 will reduce the airborne particles (read: dust) to near zero.

If you have a gas furnance then you should change the filter once a month but if you are getting alot of dust in your home then change the filter every 2 weeks. If carpet is old either remove it or shampoo it real good.Smoking in the house also cause dust in your home.

Get an air purifier... they work really well. Also, check to make sure your vacuum is up to date (The filter too). You may just be putting the dust right back on the floor while vacuuming if its an old one. This happened to me- now I have a Dyson... and I can even breath better!
