My Brit Lit teacher has assigned each student to write an anthology of the various poems and stories we read. One is Thomas Hardy's "Darkling Thrush." You can read it here:
http://www.englishverse.com/poems/the_darkling_thrush
She asked
"Does the verse reveal the author’s innovative style, or a style similar to a previous writer, places the writer into his or her historical context, reveal historical or biographical events that influences the work, etc."
Does anyone know what exactly the style of the poem is and if it is unique. Thanks. :) Your help is much appreciated.

It's not exactly unique; Hardy's verse style is within the mainstream of late-Victorian poetry; you might compare this poem to other poets of the period, such as the pre-Raphaelites, Symonds, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Christina Rossetti. In terms of themes, the poem is reminiscent of Wordsworth's calmer nature poetry (It is a beauteous evening, To a Cuckoo, etc).
