To "hit bottom" usually means to hit the lowest point in any given circumstance. Say you are in debt and work in a low-income job. Then you lose your job. Your dog dies and your spouse leaves. It sounds like a country song, but that is what "hitting bottom" is. It is the worst, lowest in any given circumstance. And there are a ton of adages that go along with "hitting bottom." Many motivational speakers will tell you that once you hit bottom, there's nowhere to go but up. That is, if you choose to take the effort to climb.

Hitting bottom means that you have realized that you need to make a change. Also for more info on this phrase, ask some one that goes to AA or NA. They will explain it alot better. The person you ask should have a decent amount of sobiety.

"Hitting rock bottom" means that you realized you sank to the lowest in whatever you are doing. You can't get any lower than you are already. there's only one way out of it and that's up! You need to make a change for the better.

It could mean that you are "at the end of your rope". You are in a bad situation and don't see anyway out. You are "hanging on by the skin of your teeth." You "can't see around the corner". You are "at the bottom of the well and there is no way up". or the "bucket has reached the bottom of the well, but there is no water there."

The lowest point. There are suggestive interpretations and literal interpretations. Anything you can imagine it to signify- it does. Think about it!
