In the introduction you introduce the reader to your topic. For example, say your topic was why cats should be spayed or neutered. You'd need to have an interesting opening line. Following would be a bit of facts that support your argument, such as the cat and dog population, or the effects of not having animals spayed or neutered, etc. The closing statement in the introduction paragraph is your thesis statement, something that you are going to back with proof and research throughout the following paragraphs.

Argumentative essays are often organized in the following manner:

They begin with a statement of your assertion, its timeliness, significance, and relevance in relation to some phenomenon.
They review critically the literature about that phenomenon.
They illustrate how your assertion is "better" (simpler or more explanatory) than others, including improved (i.e., more reliable or valid) methods that you used to accumulate the data (case) to be explained.

This seems rather obvious, but you need to include the argument.

Introduce the topic (including a brief description of the sides), state your position, and then lead the reader into future paragraphs that support your position.

First, give a little info on the arguement and then you would briefly say what each position is:

Like this:

We have an energy crisis in the world today, we are running out of resources. John thinks it's all due to the climates simply shifting, and Ralph thinks it's all due to the human race destroying our planet.
