If you live in a large city, the Office of the Mayor, usually has a website that lists movies, television programs, etc. being taped/filmed in the city at any given time. Call the Mayor's Office and ask if they have such a website.
If you live in NYC or LA, where the soap operas are filmed, send your headshot/postacard to the soaps.
If you are not currently in an acting class, register for a class, you will meet actor friends that can tell you about Extra's needed for film, tv, etc. in your city.
If you are a member of SAG MAIL your headshot to casting directors that book actors for Extra casting. You do NOT need an Agent for Extra work.

Each state has its own film sites. In PA its http://www.film.org/. Google "Film office (your states name)".
Then look for Casting Calls.
Be ready to first stand in long lines for auditions then be ready to sit around hours at a time 2-3 days at a time.
Have have fun meeting people and playing games.

the easiest way would be to get an agent. they will supply u with the work, the only thing is that they take around 12% of the money, which isn't too bad because some places will get u more frequent work. i do this, and have been on loads of programmes. and the good thing with an agent, is that you very very rarely would have to audition to be an extra. to do it on your own would b harder. the best agencies are the ones that run their own classes too, so check your local area.

You may need to contact an agent (they usually have offices in major cities). You may be required to have an equity card to certify you can be employed in the profession although I'm not sure if all extras need it. You may like to look in trade papers The Stage or Variety so you are aware of productions in your area at any given time.
