Dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy that permeates all of space and has strong negative pressure -- negative pressure is a term used to describe a pressure less than that of a surrounding fluid (such as the air).

Galaxies are moving away from the center of the universe with an acceleration. Accelerating masses against a gravitational attraction would require energy. "Dark Energy" is what we're calling that.
