If you want to catch and not kill get a humane trap (rent one from animal control) and place peanut butter with nuts and cheese in the back (but not so far back it can retrieve it without entering the trap). Set it in a place where you have seen droppings and wait for it to enter. Then you can take it to a field and let it go. Good Luck!

The best way to catch mice is with a trap. If you use bait the mouse might die where you can't get to it and then you get to smell it. I have had the most sucess baiting my traps with a fresh Tootsie Roll covered with a dab of peanut butter. The mouse bites into the Tootsie Roll and it's teeth stick and sets off the trap. I have had a lot of success witrh this method. Gum drops also work!

They make mousetraps that work on the same spring/lever principle as the classic wooden ones, only they have a built in cover so that you don't have to view the deceased. You simply hold down a switch over the trash, and the mouse is dropped from the trap. This is the type I used.

My dad swears by peanut butter for bait, I found that a small piece of processed cheese worked...

I have had the best luck with Victor wood frame spring type traps. Place them against a wall or obstruction in areas where you are sure they are traveling. Orient the trap so the spring swings toward the wall or obstriction. a litle dab of peanut butter works best, it has a good strong smell, and the mouse must work at it to get it. It is very hard to steal. I usually adjust (by bending the trigger a little ) my traps so they spring with a very light touch. Mice don't like to cross open spaces, or venture very far from cover. The areas they are using can be found easily by their droppings. They are naturally incontinent, and urinate pretty much constantly, leaving an easily identified odor. if you see a mouse. watch where he goes to locate his paths and runways.
Where there is one mouse, there are many. Glue traps are very effective, but usually inflict a slow death wwwith suffering.

Never use the sticky pads or poison as that will make the mouse suffer. You should either use the live traps or the wooden snap one. Place the trap against the wall near to where you have heard it moving. Mice rarely venture out of a 10 foot radius and they always move along walls. Peanut butter is good. If you use peanut butter in the live trap don't use too much as the mouse will freak out, cover up his breathing holes and suffocate.

Sticky traps work but they are cruel. You might try putting poison out in places where you've seen the mouse or where you see droppings. The old-fashioned snap traps work too if you use something like cereal as bait, plus it's a quick death whereas with the sticky traps they die of physical exhaustion or dehydration over several hours to a couple of days.

You can either use a trap that kills 'em or a humane trap that just catches them so you can let them go later some distance away. You can often get them in a hardware or garden store. Either way, peanut butter seems irresistible.

Failing that, you could always borrow a cat.

Sure wish I could loan you my cat; he's always bringing me a live mouse. Please use a humane trap, and let the poor little thing go outside. You don't really want to kill Mickey. Plus, who wants a smelly dead mouse in your walls. The above posts recommending peanut butter and cheese are good ideas, and should do the trick.

Get a friendly trap so you don't kill it and use chocolate as your bait. Mice love it! I used to keep mice and had friendly traps in my room to catch any escapees - the little buggers fell for the chocolate traps every time!
