How to turn off Ipod to save batteries?

Did anyone know the trick to turn off the ipod.
I'm so frustrated with this thing. There couple time I tries to press the bottom button for more than 5 second and its give me pause instead of off
Can anyone explain it to me please I appricated that.

you press pause then hold the same button down and the put ti on hold that is how you turng it off.
