kennadee30 is correct regarding what Easter is all about. Easter is also about a new beginning, Easter is really the defining holiday in Christianity. If you look at the religious driven events prior to Easter (Mardi Gras, Carnival, Lent) those are all kind of the Christian version of a new years eve party. We party down(Mardi Gras), feel bad about the party (Lent), start fresh (Easter). All the commerical symbols of Easter have to do with being born/new however now it's gotten out of hand.

It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, which his followers believe occurred on the third day after his death by crucifixion some time in the period AD 27 to 33 (see Good Friday). In the Roman Catholic Church, Easter is actually an eight-day feast called the Octave of Easter.

Easter also refers to the season of the church year, lasting for fifty days, from Easter Sunday through Pentecost.

Easter depends on Passover not only for much of its symbolic meaning but also for its position in the calendar; the Last Supper shared by Jesus and his disciples before his crucifixion is generally thought of as a Passover seder, based on the chronology in the Synoptic Gospels.

The word EASTER appears once in KJV Bible Acts 12;4, which is mistranslation from Greek word PASCHA, meaning PASSOVER.

The term Easter is not of Christian origin, but rather another form of Astarte, one of the title of Chaldean goddess, the queen of heaven.

The roots of Easter celebration date long before Jesus Christ. It can be traced back to ancient spring celebration in honor of Astarte, also the goddess of spring and fertility. This is where the Easter egg and bunny is comes in. Hare and rabbit were the most fertile animals, and thus were made symbols of fertility and abundant life in the spring season.

Ancient fertility rites also involves sex rites, and these were referred throughout the Bible under variety of names and descriptions.

The Babylonian and Assyrian fertility goddess was ISHTAR, whose name may well have been the origin of word Easter. Ishtar symbolizes mother earth in the natural cycles of fertility on earth. She was also the goddess of love, and ritual prostitution is widespread in fertility culty dedicated in her name.

Associated with Ishtar, was god TAMMUZ who, in Babylonian mythology, died annually and was reborn year after year representing the yearly cycles of seasons and crops. This pagan belief is identified with pagan gods Baal and Anat in Canaan.

New Testament doesn't mention Easter celebration, instead Passover was kept. Jesus told his disciples to continue this observance in remembrance of Him and His death.

Easter celebration came to replace Passover when some of early Christians dissociate themselves from the Jewish celebration because of persecution of Jews by the Roman Government.

Easter to us Catholics is the Holiest Day of the year, because Jesus died and was resurrected, overcoming death and sin, to reconcile us to God the Father. He had redeemed us, the gates of heaven are again open to mankind.Jesus' victory is also our victory, we are again the sons and daughters of God.

I don t know anything at all about how it started but I know that my GOD knows my heart and for sixty years it has never meant nothing but about JESUS raising from the dead to offer us all a way to the father through him. And a chance to give my kids the fun of hunting eggs and candy and learning about the resurrection. lighten up and quit thinking you get to heaven by works you do as were all sinners and fall short of the glory of GOD.
