Can not remotely open or close the car with the key. Is this a simple matter of changing a battery or should I not try to open the key?

it sounds like the key has lost it's code. this is quite common if you've parked near a mobile phone mast for any length of time.

try turning on the ignition but don't start the engine then press the lock and unlock buttons alternately a couple of times.

Almost certainly it is a problem with the battery- try opening it and replacing the same battery, if that doesnt work get a new battery.

Of course you need to be sure you are pointing it at the right car- I once panicked in a car park because my remote did not seem to be working...... then I realised I was pointing it at a car identical to mine, but not mine" ha ha

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago with an Astra key. I took it to a dealership and was told it's a common problem - the battery works loose, he just wedged a piece of paper on top of the battery making the connection more secure/tight.....had no problem since.....he also assured me he'd just saved me £60!! It's ok to open the key - just don't lose the chip!

Try opening and change battery. I has this problem recently. But my key never worked once when left it somewhere cold!

You haven't dropped your key recently, cause that could damage it or dislodge battery?
