Despite what many Jap bikers may say, ever since the Evo came out in the mid 80's Harley is just as dependable as any Jap bike. I've been riding for 40 years Honda, Yamaha and a couple Kawasaki's (Which sucked really bad) If I were to get a MX or a desert bike it would probably be metric. As far as street I ride a Harley and as far as canyons the Buell.Until you have ridden a Harley for a while you really cannot appreciate how nice they feel and how cool all that torque is. Ride On.

If you are comparing the quality and reliability of Harleys versus metric bikes then there is not a large difference these days. Harley Davidson has come a long way in closing the gap that had existed in terms of the quality of their product when compared to the prominent manufacturers of metric bikes. However, in terms of styling and performance there is not much comparison. Harley offers the V-Rod which begins to approach the sport bikes offered by the metric manufacturers and many of the metric manufacturers offer cruiser models that have some basic similiarities to Harleys but really the styling and performance characteristics of the two types of bikes are very opposite each other.

You got to ask yourself how these bikes will compare over time.
If both bikes are ridden and maintained equally, after 10 years, how is the Yamaha going to compare to the Harley. How about after 20 or 25 years.
Look at a 25 year old Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, or Kawasaki, if you can still find one that is still road worthy and compare it to a Harley of the same age. The Harley will still be in pretty decent condition.
Which one will be of more value. The Japanese bikes are good for a few years but not for the long haul.
In bikes, the Japanese still have a lot of catching up to do.

Harleys are far better. I had a Suzuki and a Kawasaki before I started to ride Harleys. Once I rode the Harley, I was hooked. I think you should ride a Harley before you assume the metric is better.

Not to knock your ride, but the whole idea of an air-cooled VTwin motorcycle engine is old tech. Yamaha, at least, made an attempt to put the rear cylinder out in the wind, as well has using cutting edge metalurgy.
My experience with Hondas is the same as yours, with your VStar, the difference being the number of trouble-free miles I have put on the liquid-cooled engines.
I have heard, by the way, that the best "American" VTwin is Victory, not Harley, and I'd rather ride a metric.

I can tell you have never rode a Harley.I rode my buddy's Gold wing and it felt like it had an electric motor on it,I wasn't impressed at all.I'm a Harley rider, always have been and would not consider anything else...And I don't knock what anyone else decides to ride because it's not my bike or my money that bought it.

If you ride both, you don't have to pick. Until the minute you go riding. Then you can actually enjoy your decision.
HD for the back roads and corners, Honda for the highway.
Added: Opinions are subject to change. Try it, you might like it. Truth be told, the Honda has been pretty much parked since I got the HD in July.

I have a 2003 V-Star and I love it. I think you get a lot more for your money with a metric bike. I can't see giving my money away for a name. all I have to say is ,Harley Dividson have very good marketing people.

If you want a lawn ornement or corner to corner cruiser, buy a Harley. If you want a bike that's fast reliable, looks good, low cost and maintenance buy Metric. There's hardly a Metric bike on the market that's not faster, more reliable and cost efficient than a Harley. Honda VTX-1800 rules.
Just remember...HONDA " Holds Oil, NO Daily Adjustmemts...lol

Harleys are for little girls who cant handle the real power of a sport bike. All harley riders are old fat guys that cant get it up anymore so they need that vibration to give them a little pleasure. Harleys are the biggest pieces of crap ever made.
