I have a friend that has not been working for more than 2 years after he left his previous job. He is 28 years old. Recently, he started to find jobs and worried the interviewer might pop up a tough questiion like "what have you been doing during these 2 years" for him.

He intend to take like 2-3 months long break after he left his previous job but eventually lead to 2 years or so. He doesnt do any temp jobs or courses to upgrade himself during his "free time".

Should he tell the interviewer honestly that he has done nothing or perhaps a better solution from the folks in here that could advise him what to do.

Thanks!

In situation like that, I would tell the interviewer, that I have been looking for employment opportunities during that time. I would recommend to your friend to post his resume on careerbuilder, monster, dice, computerjobs.com, and temporary/employment agencies. I would go in person also to those temproray/employment. I have out of work for about a one year and a half, andI just got a job through an temporary agencies and it's permanent job.

Here are sites for you and your friend on the resumes, interviews tips, etc.

In all honesty, there's not really a GOOD way to spin this. He's going to look bad in the eyes of an employer for having such a long break between jobs. I'm surprised he's getting to the interview stage -- a two year gap between employers does NOT look good on a resume!

There are a few exceptions -- taking care of a sick parent, took time off to raise children, etc.

Nevertheless, most people keep working and/or bettering themselves during this time.

My question is... what's he been doing for two years if he hasn't worked or gone to school? Is he just sitting at home playing video games??

Good luck to him... I have a feeling he'll need it.

tell him to be honest. just because he hasn't worked in 2 years doesn't mean he wasn't trying.

my brother is an engineer and had lost one job..was out of work for almost 2 yrs and then got hired.

sometimes thats just the way it is. You can thank Mr. Bush for that. :)

its not that uncommon for people to go a couple of years without a job.
