Hi my son's in 3rd grade and has to read a book then decorate a large can to look like a character in the story using different things. This sounds like it's gonna be an expensive project, haha any ideas on what we can use for inexpensive fun decorating ?

cut objects and pictures out of old magazines - look for facial features (not all one face), different textures (to look like fur, fabric, etc...) and large fields of different colors that you can cut into smaller strips & paste onto the can use a large can (whole tomato cans or those cardboard oatmeal containers work great) with the label still attached, since things will stick better to the paper than to a bare metal can. use old bits of yarn or ribbon for hair, belts, etc... use pipe cleaners, old twist ties, etc...

If you have old clothes in the house, you can use those at will to create hats, clothes for the character as well.
Other than that, its not very hard to find things and put together - Just make sure you use the right glue that will hold the items together - Some don't like to bond certain textures together.
Find some hobby glue at the local hobby store as Elmer's takes too long to dry. Or else Cool Glue (which is a cool form of Hot Glue Guns)

This project could be fun for your 3rd grader and you. You can decorate the can with felt and hot glue (watch your child with this, I've gotten some nasty burns from the glue). You can use curly yarn for the hair, googly eyes, pipe cleaners for the arms.
It's amazing what outfits you can create with scrap fabric. Have fun!

Not really, you probably have scrap paper, cotton balls, popcicle sticks, buttons, bows, ribbons, balloons and stuff like that in your house.
Use a ball for the head. Use buttons for eyes (use straight pins to
hold them in place) and so on...
