I really don't understand this. I have to do this for my Business Class. I understand that the letters and numbers are there to tell you where your things are located but why do I have to type up b7+b3? Is this algebra or what?

Okay, I know that Excel does have a lot of algebra in it but how in the world do I do the problems? I'm lost. Help!

b7+b3 is simple arithmetic! One may argue that it is algebra because b7 and b3 represent variables. Meaning their sum is dependent on the values contained within those 2 cells.
What is the value in cell b7? What is the value in cell b3? All Excel is doing is adding these 2 values together. If b7= 10 and b3=5, when you add them together, you get 15. It's as simple as that.

its really simple. when you reference b3 you are saying grab the value stored there. So if in cell b3 there is a 5, and and in b4 there is a 7 and in b5 you have b3+b4 it will show 12. now if you change the values in b3 or b4 then the value in b5 will automatically change. for example if you change the value in b3 from 5 to 6 now b5 will how 13 instead of 12.
the main thing to remembing is you are just referencing what is in a particular cell when you list the cell number out.

in excel spreadsheet, content is entered in cells, a cell can contain values or formula, and content in each cell is referred by specifying the column and row number.
b7+b3
above basically is a calculation formula, it means :-
take the content in column 'b' row '7'
add it with content in column 'b' row '3'
and show the result in current cell (note that current cell content is actually the formula b7+b3, not the end calculation result)
Hope that helps explaining it. Perhaps it may be good to have a quick read through an excel fundamental book to have a better understanding of the concept of a spreadsheet.

Well compare Excel to the Milton Bradley game Battleship. You have to tell the computer what cell your talking about and what you want to do with it. Enter B4 and format it as what? do you want it to see input as text, numbers, dates, how about having a boarder, what color etc. Excel is a incredible program and fun to Master but you have to explore way beyond why I have to enter B4. Good luck and may the Gates be with you.

You don't have to type type them this way, use them like you type on a calculator
eg = (12 + 14 + 6)/2
If you get tired of all the typing of long lists of numbers that are constantly changing then it is better to type =(a1+b1+c1)/2 etc
