Just as Pamela was the ultimate chaste female who resisted all attempts at seduction, her brother Joseph is the ultimate chaste and pure male who resists all attempts to corrupt him. Henry Fielding is intent upon showing up the corruption to be found in the Church, the legal profession and the landed gentry of his time and he uses virtuous members of the establishment (notably Parson Adams) as foils to display the extreme corruption of others (like displaying white against black to achieve contrast). Just enjoy the book and every time you come across an example of corruption in the three areas I've mentioned, make a note. Here's a good link where the themes are listed. http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:vPr37S2TK9EJ:academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/english/melani/novel_18c/fielding/andrews.html+joseph+andrews&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2

Don't take it too seriously, he likes a laugh, does old Fielding. He's mostly taking the micky out of Pamela and traditional notions about virtue. It's all basically about people being naughty running in and out of the wrong bedrooms in inns!!
