it was called "Disturb Not the Dream", and was an unbearably twisted story of murder, incest, rape, non-stop, every combination. Been trying to forget it for almost 20 years. probably the only book i regret reading

I don't remember the exact name, but there is a series of books by an author who interviews serial Killers. Anne Rule maybe? I forget...

Well these stories are disturbing because they are true!

She did Ted Bundy.

The "Hungry like the Wolf." lady who shot her 3 children and then kept getting pregnant while on trial for it...

And if you mean Fiction? Well Running with scissors was rather disturbing. I was told that it was semi autobiographical too? Now that is a life in need of therapy!

I used to own an old book about the life and accounts of Marco Polo and the part in the book where it said that in certain parts of the world, the punishment for certain crimes was Curing a human being alive in a huge vat of oil until their lower limbs softened and sluffed off the bone. Somewhere in the Middle East? Pretty gruesome huh?

Along the lines of Sybil, I read a book called, "When Rabbit Howls," another true story about a woman who survives horrendous sexual abuse by her stepfather through developing multiple personalities. Also probably "Survivors," about POWs in the Vietnam War. Nothing is more disturbing than what humans are capable of inflicting on each other.

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk the author of Fight Club, disturbs me. I've read 4 of his books now and they disturb me because the characters are difficult and outrageous and sometimes awful, but the most disturbing thing is that you see yourself reflected in all them no matter how screwed up they are. He tells the truth and throws it right in your face so you can't deny it I think he's amazing.

Probably the short story collection by Clive Barker known as the Books of Blood. EXTREMELY disturbing material in it.

I do not seek out disturbing material. I try to avoid it if I can. But in my limited experiences, I would have to say the Love Curse of the Rumbaughs in which a family is 'cursed' to preserve the remains of their mother (stuff them with sawdust, etc.) and play with them like lifesize dolls. Their is a set of twins in the book. and they take turns. One will have a 'real' half and a fake half for their 'mommy' doll and vice versa. They take turns getting her head. Anyway, very yucky novel.

In the fiction category I agree with Red Dragon.

Non fiction would either be Killer Clown about serial killer John Wayne Gacy or The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich's accounts of what went on in Soviet prisoner of war camps.

Try John Rechy's City of Night or Selby's Last Exit from Brooklyn.
