I paid his tuition and books for the semester, he went to the first class and got scared, and dropped. Now I feel bad that I tried to help him. Stupid me.

Oh, I don't think it was stupid at all! If only everyone was as generous...He will regret not going but three cheers for you for trying to help him improve his life!

You weren't stupid for trying to help, just a little short-sided in how you helped him. He should have started with just one or two classes, preferably at a Vo-Tech or community college first. If you have been out of the learning environment for too long, it can be very over-whelming. Did this person have an easy or hard time in high school. If they had a hard time, college would be even scarier. Don't give up on him, just try to help him find the best way for him to improve himself and his earning potential. College might not be the answer just yet.
