Personally, I would rather own the Maxima, because the engine has been on Ward's 10 Best List every year.

1998 Maxima, much bigger car and you don't see quite as many of them like you do with the Civic's.

how many miles does the maxima have, how well was it maintained. It sounds great to get the newer car but if the civic was not maintained and the maxima was then go for the maxima. Can you have a trusted mechanic look over the cars. We owned a 1988 maxima that had over 250,000 miles on it before major things went wrong with it (transmission, a/c, power windows)

My personal opinion would be the CIVIC. Better fuel mileage. Better reliability by far and WAY better resale value. The only thing about the Maxima that would be better is the performance and maybe a little comfort. But this wouldnt make enough difference to change my mind especially whan talking about a 5 year newer Civic.

The Nissan maxima is a nice car but it is 9 model years old and it's still a Nissan in comparison to the Honda quality. The Civic is a nice car. It's better on gas and reliability.
Are you buying one of these? I would look at mileage, age and fuel economy. I would go with the Honda.
