i just built my first guitar, and when i press down on the 17th fret it buzzes and the sound disolves, i raised the action but the only way to get rid of the buzz is 2 raise the action to high to its hard 2 play. i am thinking that the truss rod needs adjusting? any ideas, cheers, oh yea non of the other frets buzz or disolve just the 17th fret on all the strings

you may want to loosen the truss rod. make sure you have let the guitar sit over night after you built it for the string tension to get ahold on the neck. if this doesnt work (the adjustment) then then the frets werent dressed well and you should probly have a guitar tech look at it. they'll tell you whats wrong and how much $ before they fix it so you arent really out anything. i build custom guitars that i sell for $1000 and i still like to have a guitar tech do the set-up!

Using a good, true straight edge (not a yardstick from the hardware store) see if the neck is warped either way.

Then see if there's any clearance or gaps between the straight edge and any frets.

If you're getting a buzz on the 17th, one of the last few frets might be a few thousandths high.

One of the upper frets might be a bit too high. you may need to file/sand it down.
