The wires only give out a voltage based on the amount of oxygen present. On old single wire units, there's a black wire for the voltage, ground provides the other half. Newer O2 sensors have four wires. Two are just for a little heater that get these puppies up to operating temperature faster, and the other two are for the voltage signal. I believe the different manufacturers have their own wire color codes.
