I signed up for a beginners sewing class, bought a sewing machine, bought a sewing machine table, even a kit. I just found out that the class was canceled?? I don't want to return everything. So I'd like to wait 'till next semester or maybe the intermediate class in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I want to learn the basics on my own. Somebody HELP!

I don't know how much help they'll be, but here are some links to get you started. You could also look at your local library for some books. That way you can check out several to find the right one without spending a lot of money.

I'm not sure how much help a book or even a website will help. You could call Joanne's Fabrics and see if they have any basic classes that you could take. Don't be afraid of trying on your own as well using the owners manual. You can go to Walmart and get material for $1.00 a yard and just practice. Your basic article of clothing etc will always use a straight stitch. Once you feel comfortable with that get an inexpensive pattern and read through it before doing any cutting or sewing. Patterns give you some tips as well. Sewing is my favorite hobby, once you start you'll probably agree. And wait til you see how much $$ you can save making your own clothes etc.

A friend of mine used the "Sewing for Dummies" book to teach herself the basics.

The websites listed above have some fun, easy patterns. You can also probably start on the easy, quick, or "for dummies" patterns that most companies sell. They usually have pretty good basic instructions for what the pattern terms mean and how to go about assembling items.
