The best job of portraying a despicable piece of trash ever was done by Dwight Yoakum in Sling Blade, one of my favorite movies ever. Seriously, he simultaneously makes your skin crawl and makes you want to reach through the screen and choke him.
In the sense of just being hilarious, John Goodman as Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski. And in the sense of being a good role model that you'd hope to be more like, I really liked Robert DeNiro as Father Bobby in Sleepers (not a great movie but his character was something else).

Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard" (1950) She plays a has-been silent movie queen who tries a comeback but is psycho and feels she still has millions of adoring fans, when it is really her butler (and former husband) who is writing all the fan mail. It has to be one of the best female performances of all time. The film is usually on the top 20 of most crtitics lists' If you haven't seen it....see it!

Samantha Cain played by Gena Davis in THE LAST KISS GOODNIGHT. I like her character cause she plays a good split personality. One minute she's a good loving mom the next she is kicking butt.
