The only way to decide this is to independently verify what they are saying.

During my tour in Iraq we had cable news running 24/7 in our TOC (command post). Here I could compare what the news media reported with what was actually happening. As a result I determined that Fox news was the best of a bad lot for giving the most accurate picture of what was going on in Iraq.

Sadly, there is no mechanism to enforce accountability on the news media.
