I went through the same thing....
city hall
city records office
library
the old people who still live in the neighbourhood
local museum
If it's really old try digging up the back yard and see who you find!

When you purchased your home you may have received an "abstract of title". This depends on what part of the country you are from and how long ago your home was purchased. Abstracts will list each previous owner. As the home changed hands the abstract would have been updated by each new owner as a part of their purchase paperwork. If you are unsure about your paperwork, you can contact a local realtor and ask them where records of this type would be recorded in your area. Good luck!

You could try talking to neighbors who have lived in the area longer than you; also go to the courthouse and find out the names of the previous owners. Then you can follow up on the previous owners.

Definitely Country Clerk's Office and/or the local City Hall with the Housing Records. Also, check w/neighbors about odd reports, they'd know best and yes this is assuming you can trackdown the original neighbors b/c people move around. All in all if there was a dead, murder or suicide the city would have it on record. Now you got to do the legwork and research it all... have fun.

Many town or city halls have records of previous owners. Around here, we call the person to see in town hall the town or city clerk.

Actually, you should have all the previous owners listed on your deed. If not, County clerk or Tax bureau should know.
