In the last Robert Altman's movie, A Prairie Home Companion, two singers with a cowboy act are named "The Old Trailhands."
Does it mean something like tracker?

Cattle used to be raised in large, desolate places. Then they'd all be gathered up and moved out along a trail to a central place like Kansas City to be slaughtered. The cowboys responsible for keeping the herd together and making sure they arrive are "trail hands". That is, "hands" as in "somebody you hire to do work" along the trail.
