The painkillers problem is arguable. Some sources argue that his addiction to pain killers is real. Other people, Angle included, state the problem was overstated, as a way to get out of his WWE contract.

The word in the TNA locker room (per Terry "Rhino" Gerin, Jay "Christian Cage" Reso) is that Kurt really wanted a change of pace. He's saying he felt he was being taken for granted, and was getting tired of being placed in silly angles against a very limited talent pool (per Angle, himself, only Michaels, HHH, 'Taker, Benoit and very few others could really keep up with his in-ring work). Moving to TNA allowed him to face a new roster of more up-and-coming young talent, inlcuing the likes of Samoa Joe (who Angle mentioned by name as someone he wanted to work with).

Working with TNA also allowes him to work independent bookings, and requires less time on the road (since most TNA shows are in Orlando, FL). Kurt Angle is financially secure, so he should be able to do what he wants with the last years of his career.

The truth is that Angle was/is addicted to painkillers and WWE felt like he might drop dead soon. So WWE fired him because Angle didn't want to get help. WWE even had babysitters following Angle to make sure he didn't hurt himself. He has serious injuries and probably should not be wrestling at all. Look at pictures of Angle 2 or 3 years ago and look now. He looks like a totally different person.

If you look at the bonus disc in the Wrestlemania 21 DVD set, you will see Angle admitting that he can't function without painkillers and how he was/is addicted. His wife talks about how she was going to leave him if he didn't get help. It is a very sad story.

It's true, it's damn true. Kurt Angle has been addicted to painkillers. Right before he left, he was "suspended". His contract ran out and he bolted. WWE had nothing for Angle anyway. He hated being on ECW and felt that he was wasting his time. I laughed when we was put there because I knew it was the final straw. After all he said about hating ECW and that it was crap, he ended up being a part of it.
