By 'office automation' do you mean MS Office, or general IT? Or general office work?

In the case of IT, back-end processes would be app-servers & databases, while front-end processes would be web-servers that the user sees.

Front end is always interfacing with the user. Whether this is a web page or a program of some type. This is where information is entered, retrieved or updated.

Backend is the process that makes the front end work. The back end should not be a visible or noticable attribute to the user. This is where the database comes in. Storage of data. The servers etc. There could be any number of servers that make up the backend.....Web server, database server, process server, etc

The user interacts with the front end...the front end interacts with the backend.....all in a seamless manner
