If you're running windows open internet explorer and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

This will get you updates for the Windows Operating System. For Office you will need to go to http://office.microsoft.com and look for the "Updates" item near the top of the page.

Other programs you have installed may require you to manually visit the vendor webiste and compare your version with the latest supported. Normally you can find out which version you are running by clicking Help, About.
