TWIN BEDS are two identical single beds (Oxford Advanced Dictionary).
In principle, they are meant to be used by two persons. However, if you want to put the two beds near each other to form one large bed, then it may be used by one/two persons.

A normal bed made for just one person is called a single bed. A twin bed is called a twin because they are single beds that come in pairs. In hotel rooms, when you ask for a twin, you always get two single beds side by side, instead of a double bed.

This is a very good question. To respond to the answer above. I don't think so. If that were so, then why when you go to the store to buy a sheet set, it says twin on the packaging?

To add to the previous answer...twin beds in pairs can sometimes be stacked one on top of the other. In that case, they're called bunk beds.
