Psyllium softens stool and relieves constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, hemorrhoids, and other intestinal problems.

Several studies have found that soluble fiber (including psyllium) helps regulate stool frequency and consistency in people with IBS. Psyllium also has the additional advantages over other sources of fiber of reducing flatulence and bloating.

Psyllium is very useful in IBS. The easiest perhaps is to take Metamucil every day, but any form of psyllium should work. Whole seeds are probably not a good idea if you have diverticulosis, though. Use a powdered form.

Yes psyllium is useful for people suffering from IBS since it treats diarhhea. Some people like me do not tolerate psyllium that well. So I ended up getting bloated. I usually treat my IBS with probiotics, apples, and peppermint oil to relieve the symptoms. I reduce my milk intake and avoid gassy foods like beans, onions, cabbages sprouts, etc.

IBS has been linked with gluten and dairy intolerance. Look into it.

I would not try this without a doc's OK. You don't want to screw with aggravating the bowel lining.
