For example, I have seen a GeForce 8800GTX with a different name. There is a XFX GeForce 8800GTX XXX and there is also a BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC, does the "XXX" and "OC" make the two cards different?

They can be slightly different. Just look up the specs on each card. Sometimes the overclock (OC), sometimes give it different names than oc when overclocked. Usually just stresses the cooling system more.
