Play Doh is one of many "air-dry" clays so, as mentioned, if you just leave it out uncovered for awhile, all the moisture in the clay will evaporate out and it will become hard over about 24 hrs? (it will probably shrink some, and may also crack in places as well).
Putting a fan in front of it, or leaving it in a warm area (or a low-temp oven) for while, should speed up the drying process.

If you (or your child, etc.) want to make things to keep that will look better than hardened Play Doh though, you might want to check out other air-dry clays. Some will be more expensive. Here are just a few:

Model Magic
Makin's Clay
Creative Paperclay
Celluclay (add water ...less smooth surface than others)

Or you can make an air-dry clay at home, for example:

bread clay
salt dough clay
paper mash or papier mache

All those air-dry clays can be colored with acrylic paints and other water-based things, if you want.

Or you can use a "polymer" clay (which must be baked in a home oven to harden or "cure" since it's not air-dry and will never "dry out" on it's own... usually 275 degrees for 15-45 min. depending on thickness)... some brands are:

Premo
FimoSoft
FimoClassic
Sculpey
Kato Polyclay

P.S. "Modeling" clay (the heavy stuff in bars that kids have always played with) will never harden-cure or dry... it's oil-based like polymer clays, but has a wax added too (so would just melt if put in the oven).
