I work in the automotive industry, Sales & Finance. My question is Why are all department heads White. Our company talks about advancement from within, but always hires from the outside.We have several minorities that are very capable of doing these jobs but are never even considered. The people that come in are very arrogant and they abuse there authority by leaving early taking time off when we;re here in the grind every day. Is it me or is something wrong?

Obiviously there are some rascist answering some of these questions. By the way I"m educated enough for any position where I work. I am christian and do not believe in belitlting people like they do. By the way theres is no I in team.

Do you need to have some kind of degree that you do not currently have - If your doing a good job speak up and ask what it takes to get a promotion. If your not happy with, or get no response to your inquiry then leave. There should be a management development program if your company is truly trying to promote from within.

Could be a problem, but not necessarily. In sales, it is not about being able to do a job - that is a requirement, but being able to get the most out of the sales team and the clients pocketbooks is where it is at.

For whatever reasons, they do not feel that the people that are working there now have what it takes. Maybe they are happy with the status quo and the owner wants to move it to the next level. Maybe, it is because the people there are great at what they do, but can not lead, or maybe it is because of discrimination.

The only way to really determine is by seeking not just the position, but by seeking the requirements for advancing to the position and working through those to earn a chance at the next level. If the company is unwilling to do that, on a skilled person who has the leadership abilities as well as the functional abilities, there probably is a discrimination issue.

Taking time off is OK, as long as the results are as desired by the ownership. Stop thinking like a worker and start thinking like an owner - results not effort.

Okay, your English isn't perfect, and that is the FIRST THING I SEE ... while the first thing the 'executives' in your (or any) business see is your SKIN COLOR. Even those who 'talk about integration as a GOOD thing' are frequently really 'racist' in their actions, and 'like attracts like' in business, so it is more likely a white male is hired 'from outside' than any 'person of color' from the inside. I'm sorry but there is really nothing you can do about the place you are working at now, so my question is: Are you 'unhappy enough' at this job to start looking for the same or a better job at a more 'racially balanced' company, even if it means that you will have to (temporarily, I hope) live on a 'reduced income' for awhile? No, it is not 'fair' ... and it could even be 'illegal' ... but it is up to you to decide your actions in 'dealing with' this problem. 'Whiste blowers' do a LOT OF GOOD for EVERYONE, but are rarely ever 'hired' by 'good companies' because they have a history of 'blowing the whistle.' It's not fair, but there are 'ways around it' that you could do that would cost you less, with the same 'result' ... GOOD LUCK.

It does seem unfair. But I don't think you can do anything really unless you are one of the people who feels qualified and wants one of the positions.

If you think you are qualified - examine yourself honestly - do you hit or beat your performance metrics consistently? do you use proper grammar? do you communicate appropriately? do you dress appropriately? do you have formal education? etc.

If all of the above is okay, then you might want to let HR and the person these directors report to know that you're interested in moving to a more responsible position. Ask them what specific behaviors and accomplishments they need to see from you to consider you for such a position. If you were recently turned down, ask what beh./acc. they did not see in you. Make sure you get specifics, emphasizing that you want to be the best employee you can be.

Whatever the feedback they give, work on those items. Try to get the company to pay for any training you might need. Also work on your resume so you can be prepared to take a job somewhere else if this company still doesn't recognize you.

that is so unfair i know that pain, you work your a** off more than your getting paid and then they reward you by giving the position that you wanted to some lazy a** person that only likes to have you do their work on top of what you are doing anyway, plus not even get a raise, or paid extra for doing the extra work. . . . I feel the pain. I wish that every person in the working industry would be able to have an equal right to get the position they deserve and not shoved in the dirt by some person that doesn't even know half of the company as the person that's been working for years there.

It is hard to say, truly. It is easy to assume the problem is racism, but I think we rely too heavily on that as an answer to inequalities. I think the car sales business is a very tough one, and I don't envy anyone in the business their jobs.

I used to work at a place that talked about advancement from within, but never saw that actually happen. It didn't have anything to do with race...all parties were of the same race. I just think that's something employers say becasue they think it will make the regular employees work harder in the hopes of getting a promotion management knows will never happen.

I think a lot of companies just say that they advocate advacement from within to look good. It is a face they put on. Maybe one day these people will realize that there are great people out there that will take those jobs and stay all day and won't ask for too much time off, if they would just look into their own current employees.

If you have several minorities working in your company capable of doing the jobs then they should apply for them. However if someone comes in better qualified odds are they will get hired over a current employee regardless of race. If you feel that there is in fact discrimination call EEO and file. If you feel that people aren't treated fairly at your job then leave. And this is going to sound rude but stop playing the race card do you really know what is on each persons application and resume and their backgrounds which more then likely are checked? I know some very well highly educated black men & women {as well as white and hispanic} but their background checks are not clean and I certainly wouldnt hire them to work in my husbands business in the finance department.

Furthermore stop giving people thumbs down because we aren't screaming "racist bastards" if you dont want our opinions dont ask your questions. Also Ive read your previous questions and I think your the one looking for someone to say its racist. You complain about a 12% charge mistake you made which your company garnished from your wages and then you ask about racial biasis. Let me tell you this as a Texan whose husband who owns one of the more popular commercial and residental construction companies in the state. If we took a loss to our company EVERY time someone made a mistake we wouldnt be in business. True to you 12 % is nothing but what if say 20 people made that same 12% mistake in a month we'd be eating the cost. We are in our business to make a profit not to eat costly mistakes made by employee's. And you can be just as educated as you claim and I applaud you for obtaining an eduction but if you are making mistakes then NO you will not be considered for promotion!

I would check with the company to see what the job requirements for that position entail. It's possible that a specific degree is required in addition to a certain amount of experience.

Before you jump to conclusions, find out this information. If in fact a degree is not required, ask to be considered for the next available opening and see what they say.
