I was 5 wks and nothing showed on my U/S as well.. then we shot another at 9wks and there he was.. with a strong heartbeat and all. I know that was a upsetting feeling.. but don't freak out. I was a mess.. but I knew I was pregnant. Wait a couple of weeks and see what happens. Good luck and congrats.

Hello there Toni.
I just wanted to tell you that there is nothing for you to be upset about. If you just found out that you are pregnant it is very possible that an ultrasound would not be able to pick anything up yet, even an internal one.
Was there some reason that they wanted to do an ultrasound so early? Were they checking for something specific? I have never known of an internal ultrasound to be part of a routine first exam. Was there a difference between the time of your last menstrual cycle and obvious gestational age (size of your uterus)?
I am very sure that the next time you see the doctor all will be well. You will be able to hear the heartbeat and that should assure you.
If the technician and the doctor told you not to worry I am sure that there is nothing to worry about. As long as you are not bleeding or cramping there is no reason to assume that something is amiss.
Try to relax honey. You have a long way to go yet and you can not be getting upset like this.
Go out and get the book "What to Expect When You are Expecting". Focus on learning all that you can about the changes that are going on in your body right now instead of worrying! You have so much to be excited and happy about.
Concentrate on the positive. You are fine!
Love and Blessings

When I was pregnant with my first child they did an ultrasound at 6 weeks (internally) and they saw nothing. If you are really concerned they can do blood tests a couple of days apart which will show rise in the amount of hormones in your body. I also had this done with my third child because they couldn't see her on the internal ultrasound when I was spotting, turns out my bladder was in the way, oops! Anyway I did the two blood tests and everything was fine. At six weeks the baby is so small. I know it's hard to not to freak out, but stay come and think positive. Congratulations!

Don't worry, they know what they're talking about. An early ultrasound is usually done just to make sure you don't have a tubal pregnancy. They'll take measurements of the sac to make sure it's within normal range. I had my first u/s done at 5 weeks and all they saw was a black dot. I got nervous because my first pregnancy that's all there was with no baby inside. The u/s tech told me that the size was perfect and that we can't see anything inside. I had another u/s done at 7 weeks and what a difference! Not only did we see the baby inside, but we saw a flicker on the screen which was the baby's heartbeat. What a relief! They can't hear the heartbeat with Doppler until 12 weeks so it's very reassuring to be able to see it on the u/s. Congratulations and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

This early in the game the only thing they will see is a small sac if anything. Usually the sac easily visible by 7 wks. Don't panic!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you just missed your peroid and are under 8 wks. the baby is too small to see a small oval spot is all they will see on the ultrasound and that is the sac that will encompass your baby for the next 9 months. The reason for the ultra sound last night was to confirm that you were just pregnant and not farther along than what you thought. (Some patients are not honest about when they get pregnant). This is a way for them to make an educated guess as to how far along you are.

Since I had a couple of miscarriages before this pregnancy with my now toddler, I had an ultrasound from the very first time that I went into the dr office up until the day before delivery. For a very long time it just looked like an empty bubble, then slowly started to take shape. I kept all my ultrasound photos in a scrapbook and now have a very well documented pregnancy to go along with my baby book! Relax, if they said all is well, then it is, they would not tell you that unless they were certain.

It's definately possible not to see anything if it was too early, especially with an external ultrasound. They're not as good as the internal ones. I had an internal ultrasound at five weeks and they couldn't see the baby yet, just the sac. At six weeks, I had another one and they were able to see the baby and the flashing of the heart beat. I know it's hard, but don't worry. You'll see it soon. Congratulations.

I wouldn't freak too much. I have heard of a lot of cases where the baby wasn't seen in an early ultrasound. You are lucky you got an ultrasound that early. I don't have my first u/s until I'm 13 weeks, so I have been freaking out. I still don't know if everything is ok.

Did they do an internal ultrasound? If they just did one on your stomach then yes, you can't always see the baby, that has happened to me. An internal exam should show something, but if you are only a couple of weeks it's very possible that would not show either.

at 6 weeks you should see something. maybe 5 but don't panic. with these early detection test you may only be like 3 1/2 weeks right now. Get blood work done a day apart. If you HCG levels are doubling then you should feel reassured that everything is going well. Best of luck. It's prob just too early.

Hmmm, my baby showed up at 6 weeks. They couldn't see a heartbeat on a regular ultrasound at that time but you could see the sac and the SUPER tiny baby. The high risk ob was able to see the heartbeat though.
Also, they couldn't see my baby with regular u/s, they had to do an internal. How early are you? Perhaps their machine is old as well. I would check with your ob and see if they can do an ultrasound there if you have concerns!
