While I'm not sure if it was the case with such western singers as Rex Allen Sr and Tex Ritter,I do know that in the case of Roy Rogers & Dale Evans, they preferred religious songs because they were born again Christians. In fact,in the latter years of their lives,I never heard them sing anything but religious songs.

I think the world was a better place then people turned to God more. Gene Autry and Roy Rogers both sang songs of faith even Elvis sang these songs there was comfort in these songs of faith in today's world if you believe in goodness you are ridiculed if you don't then you are idolized whats wrong with this generation? when you have nothing to believe in violence goes up.

Maybe with passing years and with age they became more religious. With so much happening and seeing things around them, they decided to cool it down.
