Yeah, it's any sound used in a word which is made by some kind of friction between any two parts of the mouth or throat, including lips, tongue, palate, teeth or epiglottis.
'M' at the end of a word I suppose is an exception of a sort; it's made by the closure of the lips forcing air through the nose. At the beginning or middle of a word it's made by the momentary sticking together of the lips before their sudden opening, so this is a kind of friction.
The same can be said of 'N', though in this case the front section of the tongue and the palate are involved.
Notice the position of your tongue when saying 'N' and then 'L' - a big difference in sound from a small change in tongue position.
All consonants can be either voiced, such as B and D, or unvoiced as in P and T. Mouth position is the same for B as for P, and for D as for T, but with the voiced consonants you have to use the voice to make them. Put your hand on your larynx while making the sound to see this. (Don't say Pu, just the P sound itself).
Most consonants are in pairs like these. I would tell you them all in the English language but this internet shop is closing.

Yes, a consonant is all letters that are not vowels. "y" can be both a consonant and a vowel. When "Y" makes the EE sound as in "Kelly" it is a vowel. When it makes the YA sound as is "you", then it is a consonant. All other letters are consonants.
