Formula refers to the set of rules, or specs, that govern the manufacture of the cars used in the series. Some, like Formula Mazda, are very specific and refer to a specific car, while all the way up at Formula 1 you instead have guideslines which say the maximum and minimum width, length, wheelbase, wheel size, engine disaplcement, brake ducting, etc.
Formula One was considered the top level of the different Formulas in Grand Prix racing. Originally Formula 1 and Formula 2 were the pro series, differing mainly in maximum engine displacement. There have been a variety of lower Formula series directly supporting these over the years (and as you can guess, Formula 2 has since disappeared).
From this start, Formula has generally come to be equated exclusively with Grand Prix type racing (road courses in open wheeled cars), and is currently used with many spec series like the previously mentioned Formula Mazda (as well as slightly more open classes like Formula Vee).

there are many formulas for racing, for example lets say 250 cc engines on 450 kilogram chassis with 10 inch tires, and call it formula 600, then you can have 450 cc engines on 600 kilogram chassis with 18 in wheels and call it formula 300, (these are made up examples , not actual types)
that's what makes up the differences between formula Renault, formula ford, formula 3000 & gp-2
formula 1 is the top or the number 1 formula of racing

Basically, it's called Formula One because it's to top formula in a category for a specific type of racing.

First of all, out of all motorsports I love Formula one since 1998.
The reason Formula one is "Formula one," because only one fast renualt may win each track and maybe a mclarcen.
Only one champ named, Fernando Alonso makes Formula one, a one man champ. Now this is why its called Formula one.
Alonso will win 07 again.
