We just do it once a year and it is a tradition. like gambling once on diwali night with family and friends is also another custom. In the north of India diwali is to celebrate the return of RAM to ayodhya and in the South it is suppose to celebrate the killing of a demon by krishna. it is an auspicious festival for hindus where we exchange sweets, wear new clothes, greet one another. Bursting crackers is one of the many customs associated with our festivals and we should try and hold on to it, but need to be very careful when using crackers. In fact it is children who love diwali with all the crackers and sweets and we should not rob them of the fun.

Think of the "cracker industry" that employes so many childern. Until we abolish the child labour...buring crackers will feed some poor childern.
There are many ways to fire crackers in a safer way. Danger / disturbance / pollution is everywhere and in everything. We just have to teach the childern the better way of doing things.

In my opinion burning crackers is not necessary during Diwali. Instead of burning crackers we can always light some more lamps. I feel that God wants sincere prayer from us and not the noise of crackers.

This is true for other holidays in different cultures. I believe parents should be responsible on such holidays and supervise their children... This has not often worked though and civic governments have taken the course to limit or eliminate dangerous fireworks.
