go to the local library and get a look showing costumes, then youll have an idea of what youre looking for. you could also go and scout round your local chatiry shops for any helmets, shinguards and adapt them for the purpose you need them for. you could use any old tabards for tunics you may have to dye them though

English soldiers in the 1500's would have worn whatever they could steal from the dead after a battle , only the very wealthy wore armour or carried swords , so an old over sized t-shirt with a rope tied around the waist would be considered a uniform and a stick with nails sticking out would be considered a weapon . let the kids have free reign inventing things and you'll probably find you end up with a convincing reproduction of the kind of rabble that would have been considered an army in those days .

Search on "ren faire costume". You'll likely find some helpful info there. See links for some examples.

Full armor would be hardest to fake. Bear in mind though that most soldiers couldn't afford full armor and dressed in a variety of cheaper alternatives depending on their role and when during the 16th C your talking about. Try doing some searching on "16th century english soldier" and similar strings.

Much of your stage costuming can be made up of loose light fabrics (cotton/poly), leggings, slippers, broad belts, felt hats, ribbons, etc. Glue, baste, or serge the things together - you're not looking for longlasting stuff here.

Helmets, shields, swords - papier mache or see chainmail.
Chainmail - try borrowing some from a re-enactment or live action role play society (try local university).

If possible use felt as you don't need to hem it!

Good luck
