Well, I am posting this question yet again at the cost of five points again because I didn't get a solution the last two times and people only got confused with my question.
I have Samsung Plug-and-Play TFT 19" monitor with Geoforce 6600 and Sony R/W drive. I am way too impressed with the display. But when I play a movie, from a CD or DVD the video quality is poor beyond tolerable limit !
I do not see why this happens only with video. I tried playing the video with different players like Windows Media Player, Realplayer, Winamp etc. but the image quality is never good.
Could somebody guess what is causing this problem ?
Please refer to additional details..

When I say bad image quality, I find the image blurry and with unrealist spots of pixels here and there making the image look as though it's being looked at from behind a dirty glass.
I have tried playing DVD, both genuine and copied, but the image quality is the same.
The same videos come out brilliantly if I play them on my TV using DVD player.

DVD movies often don't appear at their best on an LCD monitor, because the images are displayed with such sharpness that any natural or unnatural defects (artifacts) in the footage will become noticeable immediately. The larger you make the pciture size on your monitor, the more it deteriorates. You will have to experiment with the sizing until you get one that displays satisfactorily.

I'm not sure how much help I can be. Or anyone else for that matter. It sounds like a problem that needs hands on attention. However, the only thing I can say is try adjusting the settings in the software, and look for driver updates. Perhaps even check the settings on the monitor itself. Beyond that I don't have a clue, except for in the worst case which may be that you simply have a bad monitor. Perhaps find a friend that you can borrow second monitor from and see what happens.
If you have posted this before and get no satisfaction this time I suggest finding a local, professional computer tech. It will cost you a little jack but maybe that would help you eliminate this problem.

I just bought a 19" Samsung monitor ( SyncMaster 931BF) It has TCO'03displays and a response time of 2ms, and contrast ratio of 2000:1
I pressed the " auto" button on the front , underneath edge, and it set up the default settings for everything. Even with all this, when I first log on. in the top left hand corner of the screen, it says " Analog ". The first time I turned it on, that display did some switching back and forth between Analog and Digital, until it finally stopped on Analog. I think movies will not look right on an Analog display. That's the only thing I can think of, is that maybe yours is analog, while the movies are likely digital, making poor picture quality.

OK people.
when playing a DVD on a PC no codex is required only a DVD decoder which has obviously got installed.
Installing codex will not in anyway affect the quality of DVD playback.
as for why this is happening it can be a number of things.
1. memory - not enough will cause delays in playback
2. CPU speed - this will again affect the quality in playback speed
3. graphics card - is it powerfully enough.
4. LCD monitor - this always affects playback on any video.
in this case i believe that it is down to the fact that he is using a LCD monitor and this is effecting the quality of playback by either being to sharp a picture quality or being set at to low a resolution.
the best way to play DVDs on a PC is still to install a DVD decoder card as this will compensate for all of the above problems.

have you got the latest codecs? these are the only things i can think off offhand which are the same regardless of what player you use on your computer, but obv different on a tv.
try going to www.free-codecs.com and getting a codecpack, as this seems a likely solution! your video card is also a possible problem..if it has issues in games and so on, then go to the nvidia site and download the latest drivers.

Some People don't understand codecs.
As stated in an earlier reply download a good codec pack.
eg Ace mega codecs
K_Lite Mega codec pack
Install and watch in clear vision.
Just because a file plays does not mean it's using the correct codec.

it`s the actual dvd unit its tranfering digital to analogue & back again. i have an LG dvd rom drive that works fine but samsung (depending on how old they are) apparently have three rates of transfer.
your monitors fine
i have the 440 geforce so the graphics cards fine
I have a 1.5 gig processor with only 256 meg memory & thats fine
my media player wont transfer dvd to play so it leaves you with trying power dvd like i did which didnt work or changing your dvd rom drive
this will definatly work
rest asured & claim 3 points back by voting me best answer.

Go to the nvidia site and download the driver for your video card.
Dont listen to James W. If you can see it, you have the right codec. It wouldnt play at all without a codec.
If your dvd-rom is working at all, then its working fine. Dont touch the dma settings. That guy doesnt even know what that stands for.

Update your CDROM drivers and video adapter driver if available. Then go into device manager and go to properties for you primary IDE channel and in one of the tabs you can set DMA to use if available, make sure that is turned on. Turn down hardware acceleration for your video adapter (display properties, settings tab, advanced button, one of the tabs there). Make sure you have proper codecs for video your watching.
