It's due to the Coriolis force caused by the earth's rotation. Whether you are north or south of the equator affects which way the water will rotate down the plug 'ole. Imagine a circular air hockey table about 8ft in diameter that is rotating at a steady rate. If you attempt to slide a puck across the table in a straight line, the puck will actually turn through 90 degrees.

Centripetal acceleration. Same way the planets revolve around the sun. As the water gets closer to the hole, there is a pull on it due to lack of water in the hole. And since things tend to go from a greater concentration to a lesser concentration, the water goes down in force...

If you spin water round in an anti clockwise direction and pull out the plug, the water will slow down its spin to a stop and it will then start to spin in a clockwise direction. This is common basic science stuff taught at school. No myth and no magic. It is due to gravitational pull.

The water goes both ways down, it depends which side of the equator you are on to determine which direction it will travel, this is due to the magnetic pulls of the north and south poles.

It's to do with the Corolisis effect. I'm not going to pretend to know about it in detail, cos I don't, but I expect you can google it or find out on Wiki or something.
And in the other hemisphere it goes the other way! Same works for flushing the loo :)

Thats just the way that gravity pulls down on it to bring it down towards the center of the earth. I assume you know that when you cross to the other side of the equator it changes directions.

it doesn't it gos down the plughole clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anti clockwise in the southern hemisphere its due to the magnectic pull of the polar icecaps one way to find the exact position of the equator is to have a bucket filled with water with a hole in and when you cross the equator the ater will start going the other way, its that sensitive.....

Its to do with the equator, and the magnetic pull. I know that it depends on what side of the equator you're on - like say, in the UK, the water goes down anti-clockwise, and in Australia it goes down the plughole CLOCKwise. So its to do with that, rather than any funny plumbing! lol
