It's more like your IPOD doesn't recognize your computer. IPODS come with a very simple how to guidebook. Read it.

You should try uninstalling and re-installing your iPod from the CD that came with it, maybe some drivers are corrupted. Or maybe it's conflicting with another software, did you just install something else? Download the latest version of iTunes if necessary and reinstall that. It usually fixes it.

These directions are taken from Apple.com.
Putting iPod into Disk Mode
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651

"1. Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you should verify
that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before
continuing or connect it to power. You can either connect it to a
high-powered USB port, or plug the iPod Power Adapter into an
electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter.

2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds
until the Apple logo appears.

4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons
and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons
until the Disk Mode screen appears.

5. Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your
computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not
disconnect"

If you are having difficulty putting an iPod model with a Click Wheel
into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the
finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel.
Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the
outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.

If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk
Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one
finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button."

This of course can also be used in reverse to switch from Hard Drive
mode back to iPod mode.

"When you reloaded the iTunes software, did you remove it through the
Microsoft Add/Remove programs panel, or just delete?"
I removed the program through Add/Remove programs panel.

"Also, make sure the iPod is not still in disk mode."
I would put it back to the regular iPod mode before you tried reconnecting.

"While i'm asking more questions, when you disconnect the iPod, does it
work? If not what screen is showing on the iPod?"
When I disconnect the iPod it works fine. It goes back to the first menu screen.

You have to use that long thing with a end on it(called a powercord!) and plug it into your little box that eats the CD's and plug the other end into your IPOD and charge it. IPODS for Dummies version for explaining the intricate process

OR-

The iPod might be bad... or the USB port is faulty. The computer doesn't need any software to "see" the iPod when it is connected as the iPod is usually seen as an external harddrive. So the problem is most likely hardware related. Faulty cable, iPod or USB port.

hope I have been helpful,

The best thing that you can do is that you just restart you computer and check the USB. If that does not work then go to the apple store factory outlet and they will be able to help you out. Don't forget to take the warranty card. You just may get a new ipod.

Sounds like they had a falling out. Try to talk to each alone and then bring them together in the same room. Leave them to work it out. Remind them that they are family.
