Top loaders in most cases have a larger capacity and are more reliable.

Front loaders tend to take smaller loads and can be maintenance nightmares.

The choice is obvious.

I have used both top and front loaders..front loaders seem to work best for lightly soiled clothes in small loads, but for anything heavy soiled..my choice is top loader.
I have 3 boys, and a baby...front loaders don't seem to get out the kid "junk", as well as top loaders.
So, all in all I say TOP.

I'm used to using top-loader machines. But I think a good front-loader would be better because you don't have to be careful to balance the load.

Get a hefty-duty brand like maytag or speed-queen (if those are still being made). You can get affordable reconditioned washers from reputable appliance stores.
