one song won't get you too far.
he should find a place where he can play live, and try to get a recording. talk to people, go to local places that allow musicians to play. best thing to do is get a demo.

Assuming that he plays guitar or piano and can accompany himself, and can sing in key, he should go to a local recording studio and cut a demo of the song. Most of these places charge by the hour, and most large to mid-size cities have at least one. If it's just one song, and he's the only one playing/singing on it, it should only take a couple of hours to get it right.
Once you have the demo ....
1. He could hand it off to other Christian singers or bands that he can get in touch with. A lot of artists don't write their own music; if he's young and this is the only thing he has written, he'd be better off shopping it around to more experienced artists.
2. He could hand it off to people who publish and/or promote Christian music. If the right person takes an interest in him, they might want to put up some money to do an even better professional recording that could be played on radio or maybe make it onto a compilation CD.
3. He could give copies to his friends, family, other people in your congregation, etc. The more people that know and like the song, the better feel you can get for how appealing it really is. We all tend to like stuff that our family and friends come up with, but for a song to be popular it has to appeal to a less biased audience.
And if you don't get much response, tell him not to get discouraged. Writing is a really satisfying hobby that sometimes becomes something more.

Why does it have to be christian? oh well, anyway. First off, record it on a cassette and mail it to yourself and dont open it! This is to prove that you copyrighted it first. Then write the lyrics and music down and send it to the copyright office or do it online. It will cost you about 20 bucks. Then it's copyrighted and you can put it on myspace for free or solicit record labels, or send it to a christian radio station. Good luck!
