A lot of people argue that it's not a "beauty pagent," it's a "scholarship contest." But really, I believe that the women who compete have grown up being told that they were georgeous and are just living that life. I have a little cousin who has competed in pagents all her life until recently. I mean she is beautiful and all, but like you said, there are many more beautiful girls in the world. When she finally stopped doing pagents she said she realized how superior doing them made her feel over others, but she realized that she really wasn't. Also, look at the pagents now-a-days. They aren't on CBS and NBC like they use to be, Miss America last night was on CMT. I think the interest has declined in them. It is true that if most girls took a bit of extra time to take good care of themselves and be proud of themselves, building self-confidence they will be more beautiful than most of the "beauty queens" out there.

I am a former Mrs. America contestant, and have a modeling background. I can honestly say I would never do a pageant again! I did the one I did for the experience and because my agent badgered me into it.
In the modeling business being a modeling instructor and teacher, the worst thing I ran across were the parents. I often questioned whether the children wanted it or if it was the parents. In most cases it was the parents. They push and push and take away so much of their childrens childhood it is ridiculous. There are actually things like pageant camps that people send their children to to help them be "groomed" for pageants. If your kid really wants it, then support them as long as they want to do it, but make sure it is what they want not what you want.
As far as the adults go they were far worse than the children I worked with. I was in the Mrs. pageant so for a lot of these women it was their last chance at winning a pageant. A big chunk of them were catty and rude and downright ugly human beings. They tried to humiliate people, tried to destroy self esteem and make people question their self worth, by comments and extremely rude actions. It was so bad that I felt like I was constantly running to different people trying to pull them back up after one of the "queen bees" shoved them down. It wasn't about what and who you were, it was about what you could pay someone to make you. Don't get me wrong here, I like to look nice and am not against plastic surgery, but when your insides are ugly, all the plastic surgery in the world isn't going to make you beautiful. Unfortunately I had a lot of those women in my pageant. There were a lot of wonderful women as well, but the bad ones were horrible. Beauty has so much to do with what is on the inside, it isn't all about what they look like on the inside or what kind of act they can put on. I am not bitter or angry, I did very well in the pageant, but I want people to see both my inner beauty as well as my outer and the stupid questions they ask and the situations they put you in, it is hard to see the true beauty in anyone. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to answer a question the way you think a judge would want it answered!
The bottom line is that pageants in younger people can greatly hurt their self esteem, and it can take away some of the things important for a normal fulfilling childhood. For adults, it can really paint a false picture of who someone is. Just because they are a pageant winner does not mean they are beautiful, especially when they have to demoralize and squash self esteem in others just to win.

I think it is not about beauty, it is about money, as it is a very big business.
I live in Hungary, and it is a small country but I'm not able to count how many beauty pageants we have here.
The first official Hungarian beauty contest was held in 1929, well I think THAT contest was about real beauty, and in the following years we always chose a beauty queen, but only one in every year.
During the WW2 it stopped for some years.
After WW2, during the communist era we did not have any beauty contests for 50 years.
After this long interval, the first Hungarian beauty contest was held in 1985. The winner was a 16-year-old beautiful girl, Csilla Andrea Molnar. I think she was the most beautiful beauty queen among all Hungarian beauty queens.
But it was a too big change in her life, and she was not able to handle it, and she committed suicide 9 months after the crowning, in 1986. She was only 17.
After this tragedy, there were no beauty contests in Hungary for 4 years.
But nowadays........ we have a new beauty queen in every week. And most of them look terrible.

elegance is interior the attention of the beholder, and what you're asserting,is an opinion and not a actuality.no one race or team of folk may well be the main eye-catching,although extra women/adult adult males might win extra contests for "maximum eye-catching" or "maximum attractive"____in the international. although extra latinas have gained omit Universe,it does no longer propose we are the main eye-catching or sexiest interior the international.this is an opinion no longer a actuality

I agree, it's hard in a world where in every facet of life the 'ideal' size, the 'ideal' of beauty and normalness is piped into every song, every billboard, everyTHING. 'Individuality' makes you end up looking the same if you go by the fashions. I just say be nice, take care of yourself and the rest will follow.

somehow sex sells. its been like that ages back. we can't blame anyone for watching, participating, sponsoring, or hosting these events. but then it could be a benchmark for ladies to follow, so as to judge themselves one way or another. but we can choose not to watch these programmes. we have our rights, its just an alternative entertainment. wonder what eventually became of those pageants holders...
