There are some South Asian Countries where it is very popoular but what steps should be takebn in order to make the sport more popolar in these countries.

i can't give you a difinitve answer because the only country i travel to is vietnam but here goes. first of all, a basketball court is very expensive, i know cuz my company installs them in new england. second of all, have you ever tried to paint a straight line measuring 2 inches by 84 or 94 feet? it's hard to do without the right equipment, especially the jump cicles and 3 pointers.
soccer on the other hand requires a field, preferably with grass and lines. most of the fields in vietnam are just vacant lots that the kids build a couple of simple goals on. the colleges and univerisities there usually have very nice soccer fields and maybe a concrete bball court. concrete is not a surface that you would be able to play on for the length of time to develop the skills you want to make bball enjoyable. it will give you shin splints real quick.
there are other reasons why bball is not popular but i think those are the main two.
something that would make bball more popular would be to find and draft more seven foot tall asians like yao ming. that way asians would be able to identify with the sport and have basketball heroes they could relate to.

Asinan Countries is very popular in Cricket. Indian National game is Hockey. But now-a-days nobody watching hockey in India. Becz they are not perform well.
India people loves Cricket very much when compared to Basket ball. Also that youngsters not willing to participate in basket ball. Not training so much.In america is very famous for Basket Ball, athletics. Becz their trained these field only.

not only Basket Ball but there are some other sport which is not so popular in Asia like Rugby, Baseball.. etc.
If you see the western countries they dont play Cricket.

i think bcze the govt. of the countries do not promote basketball at all&so it is an unpopular sporting event of those countries.i also guess that there may be lack of players for the game,which require hard work,strong physical&mental powers etc.

man i also think the same coz i am a basketball lover but still i think that there is no coverage of NBA or basketball on any of thr indian channels so i think that's why.

because it was started in america by james naismith. no one has introduced it in india
