If you were diagnosed with bipolar disorder when you were younger, but have had no symptoms for 6 years. Woul?

Would you be disqualified from being a cop? I was kicked out of school when i was in highschool and the only way for me to get homeschooled was for me to go to a psychologist and get diagnosed with a mental disorder. Would i be able to become a cop? I even have a degree.

According to the DSM you are not allowed to be diagnosed with BPD till the age of 18...(given you were in high school).. so it would work out OK...might take a little work to get in but you should be able to....

How did you get diagnosed with bipolar disorder if you have never had any symptoms. That just doesn't make sense. I think if you are able to do your job and are taking medications to control your disorder I do not see why you can not be a cop. I would try it out and see what happens. Go for it.

I'm sorry to say, but you probably wouldn't be a cop. Because of being bi-polar, the law looks at it as a mental defect. Not to mention the fact that you have to medicine to keep it under control. The law enforcement does not want to hire someone they don't think can think on their feet if it came down to a stand off or hostage situatuion. I have a friend who tried three times in three different cities to be a policewoman. They simply told her no. I am not trying to be rude or insensitive, I am only telling you from my own experiences.

Would you be able to pass the psych. evaluation and how about the stresses of the job? You could try, but if I was doing it, I wouldn't mention the degree. Why not a criminologist instead?
