When the shuttle is at the altitude of the International Space Station, it's speed is 27,685.7 km/hr average (17165.1 mi/hr).

If it is going faster, then its altitude is higher then the space station, conversely if slower, then it's altitude is lower then the space station.

Altitude and speed are related for the shuttle.

To answer your question, "can they go really fast?", the faster they go, the larger the the circumference they have to go around, so they do do not necessarily orbit the earth that much faster in the number of times they can go around in a day.

Got this from the Nasa Website:
Length
Space Shuttle: 184 feet
Orbiter: 122 feet
Height
Orbiter on runway: 57 feet
Wingspan
78 feet
Liftoff Weight*
4.5 million pounds
Orbit
115 to 400 statute miles
Velocity: 17,321 mph

* weight will vary depending on payloads and on board consumables.

The orbital velocity of a space shuttle or any satellite when it is orbiting is variable and depends on many factors like distance from planet/object which it is orbiting, gravitaitonal force between the two, etc. The velocity is decided by the scientists who launch it depending upon its use and purpose.

17,500mph for near earth orbit - or roughly 5 miles a second (not three and a half...)
