You can submit the FAFSA anytime after January 1, 2007 for the 2007-08 academic year.

There are deadlines for different aid programs, so the school I work for sets April 15 as the deadline for submission for two reasons: since it's based on tax information, it makes sense to complete the FAFSA and tax return at the same time, and the government will receive it before you miss any of their deadlines, which fall after this date.

If financial aid packaging available from the schools you have applied to will play a major part in your decision making, you should apply as soon as possible so that the information can be provided to you.

I recommend that you submit the FAFSA online--it's quick and easy! You can release the information to six schools (or more if necessary-read the FAQ).

Good luck.

Once you have been accepted by a college and you've made the deposit to hold your place, the college will send you information to apply for financial aid. The first step is to fill out a FAFSA, which you can probably get at your guidance counselor's office. However, you can't fully fill that out until you know which college you'll be attending. You also need to wait until your parents' tax returns are filed (and yours if you plan to file too).

Start as soon as you know what you are going to take and what college you are registered in to attend..... sometimes the application process can take so long that your funds are not in place by the time you may need them.
Find out the earliest date you can apply and what are the requirements for what you are applying. Depending where you are applying and what you specifically apply for, the requirements can be different.
One thing you may consider to help yourself is making an appointment with a career counsellor. The sooner you get these things in line the more stress you can save yourself.

You should apply as soon as possible so that colleges have enough time to review your application and to ensure it is complete. Most schools have deadlines for this so check on your specific schools. If you are an American citizen, you can fil out the FAFSA form. Good luck.
